Panchakarma is an intensive cleansing treatment that follows the samhitas of Ayurveda like Charaka Samhita , Vagbhat etc. Panchakarma therapy is both preventive for healthy people to maintain and improve excellent cellular function, and curative for those experiencing disease. It is a complex and sophisticated science of purification of the body/mind channel systems, and is therefore best supervised/performed by an Ayurvedic physician. The medical scriptures of Ayurveda give the example of a diseased person’s body as a soiled cloth, unable to accurately render the dye colors . To succeed in assimilating the true color, the cloth must first become clean.
Panchakarma, which literally means five actions, is essentially about purification of the body along with many other other benefits. The five actions of Panchakarma according to Charaka Samhitha are Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Verechana (therapeutic purgation), Kashaya Vasti and Sneha Vasti (two kinds of medicated enemas) and Nasya ( nasal medication )where as Acharya sushruta have mention Raktamokshan as fifthe karma.
It is preceded by a preparatory process called Poorvakarma. At this stage the body is prepared for removing “toxins” first through Snehanam which makes the body uncyuous or oily internally and externally , and second through Swedanam which means therapeutic sweating , Deepan and pachan which means improving metabolism . Once the preparatory stage is completed, the doctor will prescribe appropriate karma among Panchakarma procedures depending on each individuals conditions. The third and final stage of treatment is Samana or Paschatkarma where the patient undergoes corrective measures through medicines, moderate therapeutic treatments, appropriate diet and activities for the body and mind. On completion of the Panchakarma treatment, the imbalances that lead to diseases in the individual is stabilized and brought to equilibrium.
Vaman (therapeutic emesis) is administered for kapha related disorders like bronchitis, colds, breathlessness, chronic asthma, diabetes, indigestion, thyroid disorders etc. These are all due to excess kapha. The patient must go through purvakarma before administering vaman. For healthy individual this procedure is conducted generally in vasant rutu as this period is kapha predominant by nature
Virechan (therapeutic purgation) is applied to relieve excess Pitta (in the form of bile) accumulated in the gall bladder, liver, small intestine etc. The result of accumulation of excess toxic materials will be rashes, inflammations, fever, nausea and jaundice, acidity, etc.
Basti (therapeutic enema therapy) is called as ardha chikitsa by acharyas is used to flush out fallen doshas through intestinal tract. Enimas are of different kinds and they are well above 100. Basti is good for different kinds of vata predominant disorders. Where there comes broad spectrum of disease/disorders under vata predominant vyadhies.
Nasya (nasal administration) is used to eliminate kapha related problems affecting eyes, ear, nose and throat. Migraine, sinusitis, bronchitis are the main diseases curable with nasya. As acharyas have quoted nasa as a door of Mastishka it also plays important role in psychosomatic conditions,Pain Management -headaches, Migraine and cervical Spondylosis.,Stress Reduction.,Skin & Hair Care : improve skin complexion, hair texture and prevent greying of hair.,Paralysis,Immunity , Eye Care-act on the specific area of brain that are involved in regulating vision,Mental HealthIt is also regarded as treating prana (life). The life energy or prana enters our body through nose. It is also connected to brain and consciousness.
Raktha Mokshan (Blood Letting) is the technique to eliminate toxic substances accumulated in the blood stream. It is a process of purification of blood. Skin disorders like rash, acne, itching etc are due to impure blood. It regulates the action of pitta. So when doctor find out dushti of rakta he can use raktamokshan as per need .
